How to Retrieve Bass Fishing Spinnerbaits

How you retrieve a spinnerbait is the most important aspect of bass fishing spinnerbaits. I learned a very important lesson long ago on retrieving a spinnerbait at a local pond.

The pond I was fishing had only one piece of visible structure I could see. I threw past the cover, and brought my bait right by it without getting bit. I threw back a second time, and yo-yo styled the spinnerbait up and down as it went past the structure. I got hit, but missed the fish. I threw a third time, and with a steady retrieve got nothing. I threw out a fourth cast, and again yo- yo styled the bait coming through the cover. Finally, I hooked him up! It was a nice solid 3 pound chunk.

The moral of the story is always, always, swim your spinnerbait. Pump it up and down on your retrieve. I’ve had several times where I catch more than others, throwing the same spinnerbait, because I’m always pulling it and letting it fall. Bass love the erratic action. It triggers a sweet reaction strike.

When to use Bass Fishing Spinnerbaits

You can fish a spinnerbait year round, but there are certain conditions when it will outperform other baits. One key is water visibility. When the water is dirty, throw a spinnerbait. The vibration draws their attention, and they can’t help but eat it. Another great time to use them is in clear water conditions on a windy day or heavy cloud cover. Look for these conditions because they can produce some awesome spinnerbait bites.

A spinnerbait is also a good choice around heavy cover. Spinnerbaits are extremely weedless, so they are great around brush piles, timber, and grass vegetation.

Bass Fishing Spinnerbaits Set Up

I keep things simple for spinnerbait fishing. The best all-around style of bait is a double bladed spinnerbait. You want one with a gold Colorado blade on the front, and a silver or nickel willow blade on the back. I’ve found this type of blade combination works in a variety of different depths and conditions. A good overall is size is a 3/8 oz bait. You can try lighter or heavier depending on how shallow or deep you want your spinnerbait to go.

Throwing spinnerbaits on the right equipment is essential to make sure you get a good hook set in the fish. A meduim heavy action bait casting rod with a extra fast tip is perfect for this technique. Plus, a long 7 foot rod is ideal to make sure you get a nice long cast. Pair up your spinnerbait rod with a nice medium speed baitcasting reel, spooled up with 12 pound fluorocarbon line, and you are good to go.

Best Colors Bass Fishing Spinnerbaits

Pick a color that works for the water clarity you are fishing. For clear water use ayu, sexy shad, or bluegill style colors something that is more natural is always a good choice. In stained water go with white, white and chartreuse, and black these colors stand out and grab a bass’s attention in the murky water.

One killer trick is to find you some red trailer hooks. These can make a big difference in landing more fish. Plus, the little streak of red in the skirts of a spinnerbait gives it some bass appeal.

  1. How often are you throwing a spinner bait at Sand Hollow? I’ve tried a little bit there and Gunlock but never had a lot of luck with them. When you do throw them is it usually deep? Thanks for the write up.

    1. Along with what Rich said, if the wind is blowing is usually key for throwing a spinnerbait on those lakes. I don’t have much success unless the water is choppy. Check out the last picture on the post, and notice the color of the water at sand hollow. If a spot gets pounded by waves it gets a bit dingy, and thats when a spinnerbait can really shine. Thats how that toad was caught.

  2. I always have one tied on there. Usually in the double digits on the spinner. Bream and sexy shad patterns have worked the best. The brush on the east side of the lake has been the most productive area and the point just oath of the west levy consistently produces as well.
